Making Of

Porsche 'Pink Pig'

Fine Art Print

About the project

Starting in the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside a squadron of other Porsches, the unusual 917/20 painted in full pink was the star of the show. To honour the bold liveried 'Pink Pig', we have teamed up with Porsche to create a tribute worthy of such a vehicle - the Fine Art Print.

Final artwork

After months of waiting, our ‘Pink Pig’ tribute in the form of a Fine Art Print is finally here, depicting the famed Porsche fleeing its pursuers on the brink of dusk before the night sets in. The warm tones of the setting sun complete the feeling of the 1971 Le Mans race, all the while highlighting the bold pink livery with a red butcher's diagram.

10 May 2023

Throughout the past two months, we held two separate voting polls for you to decide the direction of our Fine Art Print. With the first vote deciding on the angle the car should be depicted in, we are thrilled to reveal the final composition, now fully modelled in 3D.

Racing against a variety of its “sister” Porsche contestants, the 'Pink Pig' is set speeding on the Le Mans track with the famed Dunlop bridge peeking behind its tail.

04. Textures

Texturing process

21 April 2023

The next step in designing the print is to texture the bare 3D model of the car, which is initially just a grey skeleton. During this process, the car receives its famous livery, and even the smallest details are added to make the final design as faithful as possible to the original.

From the tiniest scratches to the duct tape used for quick repairs during a race, texturing is key to creating the final impression.

03. Car angle

The winning angle: Option C

17 April 2023

Brace yourself for an adrenaline-fuelled ride as the 'Option C' angle triumphantly captures the Porsche 917/20 leaving its competitors in the dust.

In the background, the legendary Dunlop Bridge stands tall, an iconic landmark of the Circuit de la Sarthe. The angle not only showcases the dynamics of speed but also complements the 917/20’s bodywork curves, revealing its elegance and unique features.

Get ready to witness the power and beauty of this masterpiece unfold in our Fine Art Print.

Voting results

The people have spoken and the voting results are in!

With over 200 votes, the 'Option C' angle has emerged as the clear winner with an impressive 44% of the votes.

We are grateful to everyone who participated in the voting process and helped us decide the direction of our 'Pink Pig' Fine Art Print creation. It’s remarkable to see how the power of collective decision-making has shaped our project, and we are excited to move forward with the production as per the people’s choice.

03. Car angle

Voting: Angle of the car

14 April 2023

The key to every artwork is its composition. With that being said, here is your chance to join the voting and let us hear your preferred angle of the 'Pink Pig' Porsche 917/20. There are three options to choose from.

The voting has ended. Thank you very much to everyone who participated.

02. 3D model

Merging the parts

12 April 2023

With all the individual pieces created, we begin the process of assembling them together to create the final 3D model of the car. This involves adding any finishing touches that may be necessary, as well as addressing any potential damage or imperfections that may exist within the model itself.

02. 3D model

Modelling the details

7 April 2023

Moving forward with our modelling process, we shift our focus to the finer details of the car. This involves refining smaller elements such as wheels, brakes, wipers, lights, and more, to ensure that every aspect of the vehicle is meticulously crafted and precisely represents its real-life example.

02. 3D model

Building the chassis

5 April 2023

After extensive research, we begin by shaping the foundational elements of the car’s chassis – the primary forms, surfaces, and larger components that make up the body. This includes developing the overall structure of the car, its major contours and larger assemblies, in short, the main body.

01. Research

Reference search

3 April 2023

The modelling stage always starts with an extensive research. We gather a plethora of information and materials, either by searching online or through literature, to use as a basis for the model. Whenever possible, on-site visits are also a valuable source of information.

For this particular artwork, we had the opportunity to visit the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart to see the 'Pink Pig' in person.

Story of the 'Pink Pig'

1 April 2023

For a car that only raced once in its audacious pink livery fifty-one years ago, the 'Pink Pig' occupies a unique niche in the history of Porsche. Sporting an extraordinary look decorated with dotted lines mimicking a butcher’s chart, the bold colour scheme was to work as a distraction for Porsche's aerodynamic secrets.
